Hornpipe  …. Today

9/23/2015

Please remember that there will be no class next week while I am visiting my Mom in Tenneesee.  I am very grateful that my Mom is the most loving and positive person I know and so it is always inspiring to be around her.
Thank You, Michael, for bring Today. It's a lovely song making very good use of the major and minor chords in a key.
Playing the chords in the key of F (pg 9) gives us good practice making some new chords (Gm) and practicing new chord progressions. The exercises on page 10 and The Ryans and the Pittmans all will increase your ability to make those changes and identify the chords by the numeral.
Now for Hornpipe from Water Music. Aren't you glad we have been practicing the F scale??  Start by Practicing Measures 22-27. Measure 22 is where we shift up the neck with your first finger on the 5th fret. Stay up there until the middle of measure 27, then shift back down.
Please practice both Uke I and II on Hornpipe (slow version below).
Next we will move on to Lesson 8: Chords in Bb. Here we add the Cm chord to the ones we have already practiced. At our next class we will also play Sweet Betsy from Pike in the key of Bb with 2 flats.
I will see you on Oct. 6

Class #2 - Major and minor chords in a major key

9/16/2015

Continue to warm up with the F Scale and the F scale in thirds, and now you can add the F pentatonic scale. If you have trouble remembering it. start with the C pentatonic and then move it up the neck.
We played C'Etait Anne De Bretagne in Em and Gm and combined them by using the D7 as a transition chord.  D7 is the V7 of the new Key (Gm).
In the first part of this book we work with major and minor chords in major key. Practice the Harmonized scale on page 6 (ex 2.) the use the exercises on page 7 to practice the chords in the key of C.  Then, do the same with the chords in the key of F (pg 9, ex 3.) Use the exercises on page 10 to practice the chords in F.
Shenandoah was a good exericise in playing major and minor chords C and in playing together, which we conquered after the first few passes. Well done!
Shenanadoah is also a perfect song to work out a chord melody version: Try playing the chords and the melody at the same time. You mostly will want to use partial chords because your melody note should be the highest note. Strum intermittantly to create the feel that you want. The solo version of the song on the CD is chord melody (with some extra  runs and fills).
Next week we'll play The Ryans and the Pittmans, a rousing Newfoundland shanty.  Practice the chords (reading the roman numerals) and the notes.  We also will begin to work on Hornpipe which requires a shift up the neck and use of the F scale across the neck. We'll go over fingering in class next week.
FYI: The Bellingham Ukulele Orchestra will be playing 3 songs at the International Day of Peace Celebration this coming Saturday evening. It's at the Majestic on N. Forest St and starts at 7:00pm. At 8:00 the Walrus will be playing so bring your dancing shoes.
As always, contact me with your questions or concerns.

See you Next Week.

It is great to see everyone again. I missed you !
Nice job on Chiribiribin…especially the last measure.
Next week we'll warm up again with the F scale and the F scale in thirds. ALSO - please go way back to book 1 and review your pentatonic scale pattern.
For next week practice the minor chords that are in Lessons 1, 3 and 5. You can use the exercises on page 7 to practice the chord changes
We'll play again C'etait Anne de Bretagne in E minor and G minor again next week . Also practice the notes in Shenandoah and The Ryans and the Pittmans, in preparation for our lessons on chords in a minor scale.
I have attached The Wayfaring Stranger. You can practice the melody notes of this song as well as the harmony part.  If you are ready for the challenge, work on a chord melody version of this song and work on playing the melody notes and the harmony together (at the same time).

Class will be at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, Tuesdays at 5:00.

So…. you thought you were finished with Book 2. Well….. anything good is worth revisiting.

Let's start by reviewing a bit in Book 2: Chiribiribin, Pg 54, and My Grandfather's Clock, pg 58.
Also… be sure to review some F scales up the neck, and F scales in thirds.
Then…. we'll launch into Book 3 and minor chords.  You can get a head start by practicing the Am, Dm, Em, and Gm shapes.
I'm excited to get started with you again.
See you on Tuesday.
